Join Salmon River Anglers and explore the trout-inhabited waters of the Salmon River. The headwaters of the Salmon is a pool drop stream divided by swift ripples and large granite boulders. This classic freestone river offers a variety of nymph and dry fly opportunities. Due to the nature of this section of the Salmon, it is best fished by our Custom Fly Fishing Rigs.

Best Time of Year

The fishing starts to pick up on the Upper Salmon following spring runoff. Around mid July we see a spike in the number of fish caught per day and that number only grows throughout the Summer. The Upper Salmon produces a reliable dry fly hatch during the first half of August that is not to be missed. The chance to catch bull trout and large cutthroat increases as the spawning Salmon travel upstream to spawn. The river closes on September 2nd to all float boating and reopens September 23rd. If the fall weather cooperates the seasons best fishing occurs the last week in October.

Why fish from a boat?

Simply put, fly fishing from a boat is easier. No longer is the perfect cast required. Due to the nature of fishing from a boat it is much easier to create a realistic fly presentation, even for beginners. For advanced anglers fishing from a boat allows them to access every pocket, pool, riffle and seam. SRA offers customized boats that include comfortable angler seats, stabilization bars and dry feet casting platforms. SRA guides are down-to-earth anglers with an abundance of local knowledge, patience and great technical teaching skills.
